León has given us a lot but yet has to offer more. Just 20 minutes for 24 Córdobas by bus and we find ourselves at Las Peñitas, a beach community not bigger than a hand full of houses, a few bars and some hostels. We choose the Oasis Hostel (for 300 C$ / night) which lays at the beach and is almost the last of the village.
We feel quite excited, after a long time without sea we finally can bade in the Pacific again. I wouldn’t call it swimming, as strong currents and big waves are making it a dangerous trap for the inexperienced swimmer. Felix and Ana, a German couple having a room in the same hostel, are brave enough to rent a surf board and after some physical exhausting hours invite me to use their board and try to ride one of those waves. It is fun out there and the waves are just perfect, just a pity that Augustin from KabotiSurf Lanzarote is not at my side. For that I wear his t-shirt and make a bit of publicity 😉
Each evening we eat the fish of the day with the rice and beans combination called “casado”, fried banana and vegetables for just 100 C$ and each morning oversized pancakes at Barca De Oro for 75 C$/person.
These are cheap days of relax and breath-taking sunsets at Nicaraguan Atlantic seashore where reading, chatting, laughing and watching the local surf pros doing their tricks are the main activities of the day.
Our recommendations: Las Peñitas is perfectly possible as a day out from León for surf or sunbathing , with regular bus connections. And for those who don’t care walking one minute to the beach… hostel Barca de Oro seems a better and cleaner hostel and in low season even offers 3 nights for the price of two. And there are no better and bigger pancakes in town as breakfast.
